Classroom Champions
A few weeks ago I had the privilege of documenting this awesome group of kids. I'd have to say this has been the most unique opportunity I've received so far! Classroom Champions is an organization that connects Olympian Athletes with kids in schools all over North American. The athlete that each classroom is connected with serves as a "modern-day pen pal". Using video lessons and Skype, the Athlete helps to influence these kids positively and inspire them to set goals and dreams for themselves.
I captured the Grade 5 class of Sherwood School speaking with their Olympian Mentor, Akeem Haynes, a 2012 Track and Field Olympian via Skype. I enjoyed watching these kids, all in a somewhat giddy and nervous fashion, approach the laptop that had Akeem's face staring back at them. Each of them told him what they had been doing to help their communities and he would give them encouraging words in response. It was a fun and mildly hilarious situation that I truly enjoyed getting to photograph. The last time I was in a classroom full of children.. I was one. It's a unique experience to observe all of these little growing people, each with their very own personality and exuberance for life. Thank you to Classroom Champions for having me!
